Emori
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know to tell, keep and find your memories.
Getting to know Emori
What is Emori?
Emori is a private journal you write out loud. Every evening, or whenever you like, you tell the story of your day in a few words. Emori transcribes it, tidies it up and files it in your journal, along with the people and places you mentioned. You can then read your memories again, find them in an instant and even ask your journal questions.
Is Emori free?
Yes. Emori is free to download and use, with no ads. If a paid offer ever appears, it will be clearly presented in the app before any purchase, and you will never be charged without your agreement.
Which devices does Emori work on?
Emori is available on iPhone (iOS 16.4 or later) from the App Store, and on Android phones from Google Play. The app is designed for your phone, the thing you have in your hand when it is time to tell the story of your day.
Which languages can I tell my memories in?
The app is available in French, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese. You can tell your memories in whichever language comes naturally: your story is transcribed in the language you speak, without being translated. Summaries and tags follow the language of the app.
Your account
How do I create my account?
Your account is created automatically the first time you sign in. On iPhone, you can use Sign in with Apple; on Android, Google. On any phone, you can also enter your email address: we send you a code made of 6 digits, with no password to remember.
I have not received my login code.
The email usually arrives in less than a minute. Look in your spam folder and check the spelling of your address. If you use Apple’s Hide My Email feature, the code is forwarded to your usual inbox. You can ask for a new code from the screen where you sign in. If nothing arrives, write to contact@emori.site.
Why does Emori ask for my first name and date of birth?
Both are optional. Your first name makes messages feel warmer. Your date of birth lets Emori celebrate your birthday. You can skip these steps and fill them in, or change them, later in Profile.
Is there a minimum age to use Emori?
Yes, you must be at least 15 years old. The details are in our terms of use.
I am changing phones, will I get my memories back?
Yes. Install Emori on your new phone and sign in the same way as usual: your memories, their text and their photos are linked to your account and come back automatically. Only the original voice recordings stay on your old phone, as they are never sent to our servers to be kept there.
Sign in with Apple only exists on iPhone. If you are moving to Android, sign in with your email address instead, using the address shown in Profile. If in doubt, write to contact@emori.site before you switch: we will help you get your journal back.
Telling your memories
How do I record a memory?
Open the Record tab, tap the mic and talk: a few words are enough. When you are done, stop the recording. Emori transcribes your story and files it in your journal. You can also cancel a recording in progress if you change your mind.
I would rather write, is that possible?
Of course. In the Record tab, tap In writing and type your memory. It is filed in your journal just like a spoken memory.
How long can I talk for?
As long as you like, or almost: a recording can last about an hour and a half. Most memories take a minute or two, and a single sentence is enough to keep a trace of a day.
Can I add a memory for another day?
Yes. In the My Memories tab, choose the day in the calendar, then add your memory. It is handy for catching up on an evening when you did not have time, or for noting a moment that is coming up soon.
Can I add photos?
Yes, up to 12 photos per memory, chosen from your photo library. You can change their order and save them back to your phone. Before uploading them, Emori removes the photos’ metadata, such as where they were taken.
What if I get a call or lock my phone?
On iPhone, recording continues when the screen locks or when you switch to another app. On Android, it stops as soon as you leave Emori, and what you have already said is saved. If a call, an alarm or Siri cuts off the mic, your story is saved as it is: nothing is lost.
Does Emori work offline?
Yes. Without a connection, your memories, photos and edits wait on your phone, then sync by themselves as soon as the connection comes back. Depending on your phone, a first transcription can even appear offline; it is replaced by the final version once you are connected again.
How do I edit or delete a memory?
Open the memory’s menu: you can edit, copy, share or delete it. Emori never rewords text you have edited by hand. Deleting is permanent, after you confirm.
Emori misspelt a name, how do I fix it?
Edit the memory and correct the name. Emori remembers your correction for your account and applies it to your next memories, so the names of the people close to you are always spelt correctly.
What Emori does with your stories
What does Emori do after I record?
Your story is transcribed, then an artificial intelligence tidies it up so it reads nicely. It picks out the people and places you mention, adds a few tags, a short summary, an illustration that matches the theme of the memory, and spots the upcoming moments you talk about, to remind you of them on the app’s home page and in the widget. All of this keeps your journal organised and helps you find your memories again.
Does Emori change my words?
Emori cleans up your story, for example by removing hesitations, without changing its meaning or inventing details. If you prefer different wording, you can edit the text at any time: your version is then kept exactly as it is.
Are my voice recordings kept?
Not on our servers. Your recording is only used to produce the transcription, then only the text of your memory is saved. The original stays on your phone: you can listen to it again on the device that recorded it.
Are my memories used to train artificial intelligence?
No. Your memories are processed only to provide the service to you: transcribing, tidying up, searching and answering your questions. They are not used to train models. The list of our service providers is in our privacy policy.
Finding your memories
How do I find a memory?
Go to the My Memories tab. You can browse the calendar day by day, or search with a name, a place or a few words. The People and Places filters gather all the memories linked to someone close to you or to a place.
Can I ask my journal a question?
Yes, with Ask my journal. Ask your question in your own words, for example “When was the last time I saw Lea?” or “Which books have I read this year?” Emori understands the meaning of your question and answers using only your memories, which it shows you. If the information is not there, it tells you so rather than making something up.
Does Emori help me rediscover old memories?
Yes. The Journal tab regularly suggests a memory to read again, from a week, a few months or several years ago. The widget also shows you a memory right on your phone.
Widget, streak and reminders
How do I add the Emori widget?
On iPhone, Emori offers three widgets: Memory of the day and My streak, for the home screen and the lock screen, and Tell a memory, for the lock screen. For the lock screen, touch and hold the screen, tap Customize, then Add Widgets, and choose Emori. For the home screen, touch and hold an empty spot, tap Edit, then Add Widget.
On Android, touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen, tap Widgets and choose Emori. Only some phones accept widgets on the lock screen, depending on the manufacturer.
I do not want my memories to show on the lock screen.
Turn on Discreet mode on the lock screen in Profile, under Personalization. The widget then shows a neutral invitation instead of the text of your memories.
How does the streak work?
Each memory, spoken or written, keeps your streak alive until midnight the next day. If you let that time pass, a joker is used automatically to protect your streak; without a joker, it starts again from zero. You earn a joker for every 7 days completed, up to 2 in reserve, and a badge every week.
How do I turn on or change the daily reminder?
Emori offers you a reminder when you create your account, and you can turn it on, turn it off or change its time whenever you like in Profile, under Notifications, with Daily reminder. If nothing goes off, check that notifications from Emori are allowed in your phone’s settings.
Which notifications does Emori send me?
Very few, and only if you have allowed notifications:
- the daily reminder, at the time you chose;
- an alert 30 minutes before your streak ends, if your reminder is on;
- just once, a week after your first memory, an invitation to read it again;
- a little note on the morning of your birthday, if you have given your date of birth and turned on the reminder.
They are all scheduled on your phone. Turning off the daily reminder also stops the streak alert and the birthday message; to stop everything, turn off notifications from Emori in your phone’s settings.
Does Emori celebrate my birthday?
Yes, if you have given your date of birth. For the occasion, confetti welcomes you in the app, your widget dresses up for the party and, if your reminder is on, a message is waiting for you at 9 am.
Privacy and security
Who can read my memories?
Your journal is private: no other user can see it. Emori has no public feed, no followers and no social features, and each account is kept separate. Your memories are processed by our service providers only to provide the service to you, and exchanges between the app and our servers are encrypted. A memory only leaves your journal if you choose to share its text.
Where is my data stored?
Your database is hosted in the European Union, in Ireland. Some service providers, such as those that transcribe your voice or power search, are based outside the European Union; these transfers are covered by contractual safeguards. Everything is detailed in our privacy policy.
Can I lock Emori with Face ID or my fingerprint?
Yes. In Profile, tap the lock row, which is named after your phone’s method, for example Face ID, Touch ID or Fingerprint, then turn on Lock Emori. Emori then asks for your face, your fingerprint or your phone’s passcode every time it opens. On iPhone, its content is also hidden in the app switcher; on Android, screenshots are blocked. This setting applies to each device separately.
Does Emori measure how I use the app?
Yes, to improve it: for example, we measure which screens are opened and which features are used. This data never contains the content of your memories, and it is erased with your account. You can turn it off in Profile, under Personalization, with Help improve Emori.
Can I get a copy of my memories?
You can copy or share the text of each memory from its menu. To receive a full copy of your data, write to contact@emori.site from the address linked to your account: it is your right, and we will reply quickly.
How do I delete my account and my data?
In the app, go to Profile and tap Delete profile. Your account, memories and photos are erased immediately and permanently. The full steps are described on the Delete my data page.
Settings and help
How do I change the language of the app?
In Profile, tap Language. Choose Automatic to follow your phone’s language, or one of the seven languages available.
Can I change the Emori icon?
Yes. In Profile, under Personalization, tap App icon and choose the one you like from the seven on offer.
The microphone is not working.
Check that Emori is allowed to access the microphone in your phone’s Settings, in the Emori section. Without this permission, voice recording cannot start. In the meantime, you can always write your memory with In writing.
My memory is stuck waiting, what should I do?
A waiting memory stays on your phone until a stable connection comes back. Keep Emori open for a moment while connected: it syncs by itself. If the problem continues, update the app, then write to contact@emori.site.
How do I contact you?
Write to contact@emori.site, we usually reply within 48 hours. Tell us your phone model and the version of the app, shown in Profile: it really helps us.
